Gemini SEO: get named in Google's AI answers
Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode all read Google Search's index. That makes Google's AI the place where good SEO carries furthest, and where a few Google-specific controls trip people up.
One index behind Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google's AI features read the same index as Google Search, built by Googlebot, the ordinary search crawler. There is no separate AI crawler to allow, only a token to leave alone.
If a page is in Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode can read it, and so can Gemini unless you block Google-Extended. If a page isn't indexed, none of them can cite it. So the real gate is ordinary indexing hygiene: a submitted sitemap, no accidental noindex, and pages fast enough to crawl.
Being indexed gets you into the pool. Being picked comes down to the page itself: a clear answer to the question, evidence behind the claims, and the authority Google already weighs for search. Ranking well helps, and it doesn't guarantee a place in the overview that sits above the results.
At a glance
Google's AI and your site
- Its index: Google Search's index. Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode all read it.
- Must be allowed to be cited: Googlebot, the same crawler that puts you in regular search results.
- Training control, your choice: Google-Extended is a robots.txt token, not a bot. Blocking it opts pages out of Gemini training and grounding, and keeps them in Search.
Google's AI controls work differently
Google gives you fewer AI switches than other vendors, and the ones it has are easy to misread.
| Control | What it does | Effect on Google's AI answers |
|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Crawls pages for Google Search | Block it and you leave Search, and every Google AI surface with it |
| Google-Extended | A robots.txt token that opts pages out of Gemini training and grounding | Pages stay in Search. It does not remove you from AI Overviews |
| nosnippet · max-snippet | Page-level limits on how much text Google shows | The only way to limit what AI Overviews shows from a page. They limit your regular snippets too |
| noindex | Keeps a page out of Google's index | The page can't appear in any Google AI answer |
There is no separate AI Overviews opt-out. You can't leave AI Overviews and stay in Search. For most brands the reverse problem matters more: pages that aren't indexed, are marked noindex by a template, or sit behind a firewall rule that slows Googlebot. No AI setting fixes that. Check Search Console first. Accurate to November 2026; vendors change this often. See the AI crawler guide for every engine's bots.
Gemini and AI Overviews, side by side with your competitors
StarRise tracks Gemini and Google AI Overviews as two separate lanes, because they answer in different places and don't always name the same brands.

Six steps to get named by Gemini and AI Overviews
Google's AI starts from your search foundations, then rewards pages that answer the question clearly and prove it. What transfers from SEO, and what's new.
Step 1
Let Googlebot in everywhere
Check robots.txt, your CDN and your firewall. A bot rule meant for AI crawlers sometimes catches Googlebot too.
Step 2
Get key pages indexed
Submit your sitemap in Search Console and work through the page indexing report. A page Google hasn't indexed can't be cited.
Step 3
Leave snippet controls alone
Unless you have a legal reason, avoid nosnippet on pages you want quoted. It hides them from AI answers and regular snippets alike.
Step 4
Answer the question in the first paragraph
Match pages to the searches buyers run, and open with a direct answer Google can lift as written.
Step 5
Add evidence and structure
Measured results, sources and expert quotes on the page, plus schema markup so Google reads your organization, products and FAQs cleanly.
Step 6
Measure and repeat
Fixes on your own site show up as Google re-reads it, typically within a few weeks. Wider authority builds over a couple of months.
Gemini SEO questions
Is Gemini SEO different from regular SEO?
It overlaps more than any other engine, because Google's AI reads the Search index. Crawlability, indexing and authority all carry over. What's new is the answer itself. Google names a few brands and quotes a few pages, so clear answers and evidence on the page matter more than they did for a blue link.
If I block Google-Extended, do I disappear from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended opts pages out of Gemini training and grounding. Your pages stay in Search, and AI Overviews can still show them.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Not separately from Search. Snippet controls like nosnippet and max-snippet limit what AI Overviews shows from a page, and they limit your regular search snippets too.
How do I get Google AI Overviews to feature my brand?
Make sure the page is indexed, answer the search in the opening paragraph, and back it with numbers and sources. Then look at which pages the overview cites today for your keywords. StarRise lists those, so you know which page to beat.
Doesn't Search Console already show AI Overviews?
Search Console can show that you appeared. It doesn't show what the AI said, or which competitors it named next to you. StarRise checks whether an AI Overview appears for your keywords and whether you are cited in it.
Which plan includes Gemini and AI Overviews?
Starter and up. The free plan covers ChatGPT only. See pricing.
